WEEK 26: The Things I Miss from Home

It's been a relatively quiet couple of weeks in the lead up to Oktoberfest this coming weekend #excitementoverload. So rather than boring you all with my mundane happenings of the past week I thought i'd do a post on the things I miss most from home.

Whenever I catch up with someone thats in town for a brief moment or arriving for their own London adventure one of the first things I get asked is, "What do you miss most about home?" The list is endless, but here's a count down of the top ten things I miss from home.

10. Access to an Extensive Wardrobe
First world problems I know! But if you know me at all you'll know how much I love clothes. Don't get me wrong I managed to bring a decent amount of clothes with me and I shouldn't really complain, but every now and then I think of 'that top' that would go perfectly with 'these trousers' or 'that dress' that would be great for that party coming up - you get the picture.

Cheesy grin when surrounded by clothes

9. Talking freely
This will make sense to anyone thats lived abroad. Talking freely - AKA being able to say what you're thinking without first putting it into British context. I know what you're all thinking - you should just be yourself! But sometimes (more often than not) I'd rather avoid the scrutiny and mocking of my accent and/or terms used. They all mean well I know, and are clearly just having a laugh but it does act as a constant reminder that I'm not in my native land any more and well to me what sounds funny to them is just normal for me. My most recent mess up - calling a "light bulb" a "light globe" apparently thats not a thing here. Light bulb moment indeed.

8. Driving
This is a simple one really. I really miss having access to a car and being able to drive myself around. I'm not complaining about getting around London, it really is super easy and efficient. But theres something about driving yourself, and being in control. Plus theres nothing more therapeutic than hitting the road, driving fast and cranking some tunes, maybe even singing along a little too loudly? (Nah never).

Me and my former Fiesta - Man I miss her!

7. Space
Again probably sounds weird to some, but London is a super crowded city. Everyone lives on top of one another. As an only child thats grown up having virtually an entire wing of the house to myself (#spoilt) it's been a learning experience living in such close proximity to a variety of housemates, boyfriends, girlfriends and visitors. Its not just housing thats crowded, even the streets are flooded with people at all hours of the day, and well lets not even get started on the tubes.

Just me enjoying my space

6. The Weather
You all saw this one coming! I've been spoilt with beautiful weather virtually all year round in Sydney. We've just come to the end of summer in London and I constantly find myself thinking - Really was that it? A couple of semi-warm days here and there but nothing like the weather we have back home. It's a scary scary thought that I'm complaining about the English weather when I've only experienced what everyone says is the best time of the year. The worst is yet to come....

5. Beaches/Proximity to water
Any one who's ever been lucky enough to experience the beauty that is Australian beaches will be right there with me on this one. I'll admit I'm not a big beach swimmer, but there's something about being close to the big ol' blue that calms me. This is not just limited to the beach but also includes rivers, lakes etc. London does have the almighty Thames river, a popular tourist attraction and I'm lucky enough enough to work right along side it. However I'm telling you now its just not the same, it's extremely dirty - only last night a friend of mine told me how he watched a crate float below the surface. Unfortunately it just doesn't have quite the same effect. You never know whats lurking beneath the muddy surface of the Thames.

4. Fooooooood
Obviously not all foods, I do still eat I promise! But this one does rank pretty high on my list for a reason, there are certain things that are either not quite the same over here or are just not available to buy. Sushi for one, is pretty horrible over here. It's virtually impossible to find somewhere that makes it fresh and while the pre-prepared stuff is everywhere it is completely flavourless and extortionate to buy. I've also mentioned in a previous post that a good steak is also hard to find in London.       Also smoothies and Juices? Not so easy to find over here - I'm partial to a smoothie when I'm feeling a little under the weather, but this craving is yet to be fixed since arriving in London. But most of all I miss my Mumma's home cooking, my Pappas too if I'm being really honest. I'm blessed with two parents that both cook extremely well.

3. Sydney
Also surprisingly high on the list. I always knew I loved Sydney, but living away from it has made me appreciate the city so much more. I've already mentioned my love of beaches and water which Sydney has in abundance, however its not just this that makes Sydney as pretty as she is. There are so many pockets that offer different kinds of beauty; where my parents live for example in the bush land offers an entirely different kind-of Australian beauty. Sydney certainly has a lot to offer and some days I can't wait to come back and see it all over again.

2. Benny-J-Man
This was a tough call, and if I'm being honest probably should tie with number 1. You'll notice he's already featured in a few photos so far. Again, those of you who know me well know the immense love I have for my best buddy Benjamin, our handsome Cocker-spaniel - a dog to some but a brother to me. I could go on for hours about why I miss this cute creature - but really I think the photo says it all. He's always there for me and it's hard for me knowing that he probably doesn't understand why I'm not around. I'll be back Benny!! Nothing lights up my face more than seeing a golden cocker-spaniel roaming the streets of London reminding me of my best mate.

My best fur-friend - Benny
1. Family/Friends
You all knew it, how could it be anything else? I'm very very lucky to already have an amazing circle of friends over here in London. But thats not to say I don't miss my friends back home, Facebook has been a life saver in keeping me connected with you all and I hope you've all enjoyed following my journey through London Life X Emma as well.
Most of all I miss the two people in my life whom I wouldn't be here without; Mum and Dad. You're in my thoughts constantly and it thrills me to know that you're both behind me and my adventure 100% whenever it is I choose to come home - I can just hear Mum reading this and saying, "But not forever please Emma."

A bunch of people I love!!
Well there you have it! My top ten. Would love your comments on this one! Did anything on the list surprise you?

Bring on the Oktoberfest four day weekend!! Big love to you all and hot to catch you all next week xo

WEEK 23-25: Parties, Poshness, & People

Now well and truly back to London life after an unforgettable holiday. My first weekend following my return to work was a long weekend - talk about good timing. It was also London cous' Brookes birthday. As to be expected Brooke celebrated in style with drinks and fun times at a cool bar in Brixton.

The birthday girl looking beautiful

Cocktails galore.

Brooke's pals

The next morning both exciting and so un-fun at the same time it was time to move off Nikki's couch and into my new permanent residence. Yay to having a real bed and a place to hang my clothes again - boo to having to move all my belongings yet again.

It's been a couple of weeks now since I moved in and I have my room looking my own. It's nothing much, but it's home.

The week went by with not a whole lot to report, slowly sussing out the new commute to and from work and the area in general.

The following weekend it was time for a posh 20's themed prohibition party. This is one I'd been looking forward to for a while, not normally one for "dress-up" parties I've always loved the style of the 1920's so was happy to deck myself for a night of fabulousness. Such an a great event, everyone looked stunning - even the band was authentic.

So many sequins!!!

A busy week at work, in the lead up to New York fashion week meant I was eager to get home on Friday night and unwind in a night of nothingness.

Saturday night I had an overdue catch up with my Siena College gal pal - Maria, we caught up over drinks and then drinks turned into a late night snack. As you can tell we were both super excited over the purchase of our yummy fries.

Love this girl!
3 forks for 2 people, seems right.
The best news of the weekend? My girl Ashleigh arriving in London to begin her own away-from-home adventure. So excited to have this girl close by again!

The art installation in the background
We caught up in Covent Garden to check out the art installation currently on display there as well as catch up over a feast of a meal.

So much yummy food!!
I'm sure you'll be seeing many more pictures of the two of us together. I hope you love your London adventure as much as I do!

Until next week.... xo

WEEK 20 - 22: European Adventures - Part Two - Avignon to Vienna

Part two begins in the small town of Avignon, lets just go right ahead and skip the travelling part of the day - no one wants to hear about that. Avignon is a small picturesque and medieval town in South-East France, located right on the Rhone river.

Rhone River
Our hostel was just on the other side of the river, about a five minute walk to the town. Shortly after arriving we were taken on a walking tour of the town, thats how small the town is - you can walk through the sites in under an hour. The town has a lot of history to it, but for me it was the architecture that I loved the most. Unlike anything you'd ever find in Australia.

Crossing the bridge into the town
Carousel in the town square

After our walking tour a few of us chose to grab some supplies and have a picnic dinner by the bridge to watch the sunset. Good decision.

Avignon was very much a pit stop on along the way to Barcelona, in the town for less than 24 hours. We left for Barcelona first thing in the morning. An hour into our trip we stopped off at the beautiful Pont Du Gard. This structure is truly incredible, built in first century AD to transport water. It's built without concrete, built at a slight incline so water would flow from point to point and is structured with jigsaw like pieces - still standing strong centuries later.

We arrived to the bustling city of Barcelona in the late afternoon, on arrival we jumped off the bus at the complex Sagrada Familia building, I can't get over how long this building has taken to construct, construction began in 1882!! You could spend hours discovering different parts to the building and thats just the outside!

Try to take a photo without the construction in it - I dare you!!
We then took a bus tour of the city, stopping off right at the top with a great view of the city.

The birds there so you know its real
Tonight would be my last night with my Topdeck friends, so sad to say goodbye. The night began with Paella and HUUUGE glasses of Sangria, followed by a traditional flamenco show. Lets just say the night flowed on from here much to celebrate with this being my last night on tour. At around 1.30am panic hit as I realised my phone was gone from my bag and suddenly the fun had gone from my night.

The straws were approximately half a metre long
I rose the next morning praying that my stolen phone was just a dream. No such luck. It was gone and along with it came my lousy cold and a deathly hangover. Day 2 Barcelona - not so fun. I spent the day walking to places we visited the night before hoping they'd have my phone. No luck.

I know in the grand scheme of things a stolen phone isn't the end of the world, but no longer in the safety of my trusty tour guide and tour friends I did feel a little lost. My new hostel was close to the beach so I spent some time on the sand catching some rays, hopeful that this would cure my cold.

Navigating the metro system - who needs a phone anyway?

On my last day in Barcelona I went back to La Rambla (the main strip) and ate at the markets, followed by a spot of shopping. For dinner - a tapas meal before heading to the magic fountain to watch the picturesque water show. There's a lot happening in Barcelona but after my phone was stolen I couldn't help constantly feeling unsafe. I was excited to meet my friends in Vienna and relax in our apartment.

Coconut ice cream - yummmm

On the way to the fountain - the building in the back used to be a bull fighting arena, now converted to a shopping mall.
The magic fountain, those little white dots everywhere isn't my camera playing up thats camera flashes - people everywhere!!!
Grand finale!!!
An uneventful flight to Vienna, followed by waiting at the arrivals gate for Brooke and Nikki - like a Mother waiting for her kids to return home. I was so happy to see them both. A 20 minute ride from the airport and we arrived at our stunning apartment - thanks Nikki!!!

After grabbing some much needed lunch we went to get some supplies; wine, cheese, nibbles to prepare for a quiet night in our luxury hideaways robes, in our luxury apartment. Bliss!!

The living/dinning area - my room just across the way
The master suite, bathroom behind.
Nibbles!!
Plush robes
The following day we took a Big Bus tour around the town - surprisingly small, but rich in history. An art lover would spend weeks traipsing all the stunning galleries and museums on offer, we were happy with the view from the outside, enjoying the Vienna sunshine.

Opera house

Following our bus ride we grabbed a late lunch and took a look at the shops on the main street.

The main street
That evening we found a restaurant that would cater to Brooke's gluten-free schnitzel craving. While mine did contain gluten it was undoubtedly the best schnitzel I've had in all my life - high praise.

Being Saturday night, we tried to find some bars and nightlife to enjoy - sadly it seemed there was not a lot going on, but we had fun sipping cocktails along the way.

The-not-so-big night out seemed to trigger my cold again (I know I'm like a broken record with this cold) and I knew my body was telling me to stay in and rest today. Brooke headed home today so myself and Nikki spent the day binge watching trashy television and taking turns using the massive bath tub. Before we knew it it was dinner time, so we went in search of steak. One things for sure, all the food we ate in Vienna was so delicious!!

The next morning Nikki and I went for a walk around Mozart's Gardens and the surrounds - stunning. It was then time to head to the airport, farewell to Vienna, farewell to my European adventure and back to living the London life.

So happy I can share my adventure with you all. Thanks to all my Topdeck friends for sharing your pics with me (and the world). Here's to planning my next getaway and getting healthy again!! xo
